The Sukhoi Su-30MKI is a twin-engine, multi-seater super fuel-efficient fighter aircraft, specifically built to serve the needs of the Indian Air Force. The Indian fighter customization makes it more expensive than the Russian and China models. The aircraft is equipped with Indian systems as well as aircraft systems and subcomponents in France and Israel. It’s the Indian Air Force’s frontline aircraft. This aviation remains the Indian Air Force’s backbone.
Each jet fighter has some advantages and drawbacks. And the largest fighter in the world, F-22, has no mounted Helmet display and sight (HMDS). There are also defects in Sukhoi Su-30MKI too. I’ve got some details on Sukhoi Su-30MKI faults. Any info is available in the public domain before I begin, let me clarify that I do not mess with national security.
Drawbacks of India’s Sukhoi Su-30MKI Fighter Aircraft
AL 31FP 3D Thrust Vector Control (TVC) Engines function Sukhoi Su-30MKI. However, the issue is that this is not achieved in line with the manufacturer’s official statements. It faces many failures and in the mid-air due to Indian atmosphere. This is because Super Sukhoi update mostly centres on engine substitution in which AL-31 is replaced with AL-41.
Spare Parts Management
Not only India, most countries encounter a major problem using fighter aircraft of Russian origin. Sukhoi is not any different than MiG, because it has modern consumers. Myanmar has recently begun to receive Su-30SM and Algeria has purchased Su-35s and even to buy Su-57 in talks. Mikoyan Gurevich, on the other hand, did not please any customer with the last MiG-35. And India and Multi-Role Battle Aircraft (MRCA) are their only chance.
In addition, both firms are financially poor and are unable to supply replacement parts on schedule, resulting in aircraft being underground, resulting in just 60–65% of Su-30s at any given time. This can be overcome by committing to complete ToT with Russia in order to manufacture very difficult vital components.
High Band Jammer Issues
Note the Su-30MKI’s wingtips, do you see the two cylindrical things emerge? It’s a High-Band Jammer make in Russia called SAP-518 that can jam radar-guided missiles and other RF devices. Su-30MKI is seldom found with this jammer and severe problems occur with it.
First, it is very bulky and limits the carriage of other essential stores by aircraft. Secondly, the difficulties of the programme when cueing it using the indigenous system Tarang Radar Warning Receiver (RWR). Elta 8222 is another HBJ for Su-30MKI. This jammer still has some problems with the Israeli origin.
Lack of Missile Approach Warning System (MAWS)
MAWS can detect incoming rockets and warn the pilot of the threat, as the name implies. It also detects the type of rocket that assists with adequate countermeasures during defence manoeuvring. Su-30MKI requires jammers for survival of incoming warheads, Radar Warning Receiver (RWR), Early Warning (EW) control systems without MAWS. MAWS is among the most powerful missile search engines, not using radar as a reference. Sukhoi’s has evaded all the American BVR missile launched by PAF’s F-16 jets during an air raid that took place the day after the IAF airstrikes in Balakot in 2019.

The SU-30MKI is a large aircraft with a slightly bigger signature for the radar. In comparison, the SU-30MKI does nothing to mask a radar signature that reaches 6 sq m. While current latest-generation aircraft features more than stealthy practices and electronic warfare. (This was one of the key reasons why the Balakot attacks used Mirage 2000).
Now it would be easy to put down the aircraft’s RCS but it requires a lot of motor and radar improvements. The SU30-MKI Elta ELL-8222 auto safety jamming pot will fry incoming BVR and AAM searchers.
Despite this inconvenience, when in flight, the aircraft is a disaster for all other enemy aircraft facing it.
